Forages for Reduced Nitrate Leaching field day

Date: 22 March 2018; 10 am – 2 pm

Location: Parekarangi calf shed, Rotorua

Goal: To discuss practical outcomes (particularly from the FRNL programme) for Maori-owned Rotorua farms to sustainably meet their nitrate leaching targets.

  • Parekarangi representative (James Warbrick, Mark Johnston): Welcome and overview of the farm, its goals, nutrient limits and implications for the farm. 15 min + questions
  • Stewart Ledgard (AgResearch): previous N leaching research at Parekarangi and in the Rotorua catchment to reduce N leaching. 10-15 min + discussion
  • Ina Pinxterhuis (DairyNZ): brief overview of FRNL programme and practical relevant outcomes around catch crops, plantain, fodder beet. 10-15 min + discussion
  • Shane Kelly (Ngai Tahu): Outcomes as a monitor farm and successful changes implemented to reduce leaching. 10-15 min + discussion
  • LUNCH: 30-45 min, then walk to crops if weather permitting
  • Vicki Burggraaf (AgResearch): Monitoring at Parekarangi – forage cropping and N leaching results for 2016/17. 10 min + discussion
  • Mark Johnston (Farm consultant): Learnings and challenges of trialling forage crops and plantain pastures at Parekarangi
  • Grant Rennie (AgResearch): Scenarios for Parekarangi to reduce N leaching. 10 min + discussion
